Organizations race to build SAP BTP skills before S/4HANA deadline

16 July 2025

More companies are seeking external support to maximize the value of the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), including upskilling their workforce. Yet, according to senior leaders at K2 Partnering Solutions, many are only now engaging with BTP later than expected.

SAP BTP acts as a unified platform for building, extending, and integrating systems. Officially launched in 2021, it evolved from predecessors like SAP Cloud Platform and HANA Cloud Platform, with roots stretching back to SAP NetWeaver Cloud in 2012. Although SAP has promoted BTP for years, interest from K2 clients has surged only recently.

Over the past 12 months, K2 has witnessed a sharp rise in requests for both training and consulting related to BTP. This growth largely stems from BTP’s critical role in accelerating and simplifying migrations to S/4HANA Cloud ahead of the December 2027 deadline, when mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ends.

“BTP has been around for a while, but it’s finally gaining serious traction as more businesses migrate to S/4HANA,” says Abe Iruegas, Chief Revenue Officer at K2. “Until very recently, many companies were still tied to older SAP integration tools and hesitant to move on from that investment.”

BTP supports smoother migrations by enabling clean-core extensions and improving data management. Its ability to integrate with non-SAP platforms is also driving demand for K2’s end-to-end SAP solutions.

“We’ve seen a surge in niche SaaS tools entering the market. With more systems in play, companies are exposing their data through multiple new channels,” explains Bob Politi, Global Head of SAP Consulting Practice at K2. “This creates major integration challenges, especially when that data needs to connect with SAP. That’s why SAP is urging clients to use BTP: it’s designed to help manage this growing complexity. But companies often lack in-house BTP skills, so they need the kind of specialist training that K2 University provides,” he adds.

Clients’ interest in BTP support covers several key areas, including:

  • Consolidating development efforts onto a single platform to reduce fragmentation and streamline lifecycle management across both custom and core SAP environments.
  • Creating clean-core extensions that maintain upgradeability and minimize disruptions during future SAP updates.
  • Establishing robust security and compliance frameworks to protect sensitive information and adhere to regulatory standards.
  • Standardizing analytics and automation initiatives to prevent inefficiencies caused by tool-specific, fragmented development approaches.

As complexity rises and deadlines loom, many organizations now depend on trusted partners to design sustainable BTP strategies. Training in BTP, for example, equips employees with the skills needed to make the most of the platform.
